
Dr. Gita Gopinath is an Indian-American economist renowned for her influential roles in global economic policy.
Academic Foundations and Early Career
Gopinath’s academic journey commenced at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, followed by the Delhi School of Economics. She earned her Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University, where she studied under prominent economists such as Kenneth Rogoff, Ben Bernanke, and Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas . Her early career included positions at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Harvard University, where she served as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics
Leadership at the IMF
In October 2018, Gopinath was appointed as the IMF’s Chief Economist, becoming the first woman to hold this position. During her tenure, she co-authored the “Pandemic Paper,” which outlined strategies to end the COVID-19 pandemic and led to the establishment of a Multilateral Task Force comprising the IMF, World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO), and World Trade Organization (WTO) . In December 2021, she was elevated to the role of First Deputy Managing Director, overseeing the IMF’s work on multilateral surveillance, monetary and fiscal policies, debt, and international trade
Return to Academia
After a distinguished tenure at the IMF, Gopinath returned to Harvard University in August 2025 as the Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics. Her research continues to focus on international finance and macroeconomics, contributing to the academic community’s understanding of global economic dynamics
Recognition and Honors
Gopinath’s contributions to economics have been widely recognized. She was named one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the IMF in 2014 and was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011. In 2019, she received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman from the President of India. She has also been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society
Personal Life
Gopinath is married to Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal, a fellow alumnus from the Delhi School of Economics. The couple has a son named Rohil, born in 2002.
